    Kjeld Schmidt holds a degree in sociology from the University of Lund, Sweden (1975). Habilitated professor of Computer Science (‘Distributed Systems and their application in distributed organizations’), University of Aarhus 1998, and of Organizational IT, IT University of Copenhagen 2006. Schmidt has been involved in the research area of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) for the last 20 years and has played a key role in defining the field. His research primarily focuses on the theory of cooperative work and the conceptual foundations of CSCW systems design.Schmidt has been Editor-in-Chief of/ Computer Supported Cooperative Work: The Journal of Collaborative Computing/(or JCSCW) since 1992 and has at the same time been centrally involved in organizing a large number of CSCW conferences.

    Among his widely cited publications are ‘Riding a tiger, Or computer-supported cooperative work’ (ECSCW 1991); ‘Taking CSCW seriously: Supporting articulation work’ (with Liam Bannon, JCSCW 1992); ‘Coordination mechanisms: Towards a conceptual foundation for CSCW systems design’ (with Carla Simone, JCSCW 1996); ‘Of maps and scripts: The status of formal constructs in cooperative work’ (Journal of Information and Software Technology 1999). His recent work includes ‘Remarks on the complexity of cooperative work’ (/Revue des sciences et technologies de l’information,/2002), a special issue on ‘Awareness in CSCW’ (JCSCW 2002), and an article on ‘Ordering systems: Coordinative practices and artifacts in architectural design and planning’ (with Ina Wagner, JCSCW 2004). Schmidts doctoral dissertation (‘higher doctorate’) was published by Springer in 2007.
